A globally celebrated master of the Kanjira, Vidwan Shri Ganesh Kumar has revolutionized the role of this traditional South Indian frame drum. Trained under Sri T.R. Harihara Sharma and T.H. Subash Chandran, he has expanded the instrument’s reach beyond Carnatic music, blending its rhythms seamlessly with genres like jazz, pop, and world music.

Ganesh’s innovative artistry has earned him critical acclaim for creating a unique fusion described by The Hindu as a “whole new genre of Indo-Western Classical Music.” His performances across USA and Europe with Western musicians have brought the Kanjira to a global audience, establishing him as a pioneer in world music fusion.

A recipient of the prestigious Fulbright Fellowship, Ganesh has shared his expertise at universities across North America through workshops and master classes. He also received the Maryland State Arts Council Fellowship for Folk Arts and launched his signature Artist Innovation Series Kanjira with Cooperman Drum Company. His instructional DVD series, “The Art of Kanjira,” continues to inspire percussionists worldwide.
